Description

1867 No Rays Shield Nickel, PR66
None Numerically Finer at PCGS

1867 5C No Rays PR66 PCGS. The removal of the rays from the reverse design seems to have aided in the Mint's ability to fully strike five cent pieces in the hard nickel alloy, as most proof nickels of this year exhibit well-struck design elements. This representative is no exception, and also boasts highly reflective fields and nearly perfect surface preservation. A light golden hue warms each side, giving this Premium Gem a pleasing level of eye appeal. Mint records show 625 examples of this issue were distributed as part of silver proof sets, though an unknown number of additional pieces were also sold as part of minor proof sets; as the latter sets did not contain any precious metal, the Mint was not required to record their sales.
