Elusive 1867 With Rays Shield Nickel, PR64

1867 5C Rays PR64 PCGS. The 1867 With Rays Shield nickel is much, much rarer than its 1866 With Rays counterpart. Breen estimates in his Proof Encyclopedia that 25 examples were produced, including only a few in minor proof sets produced in February or earlier and perhaps a few singles: The 1867 No Rays nickels came out as early as March of that year. Recent research by John Dannreuther suggests that only 15 coins constituted the initial delivery, with all others later restrikes. Other collectors have made an even more extreme suggestion, that none of the 1867 With Rays nickels were struck in that year. Whatever the case, the 1867 With Rays is the key to the proof Shield nickel collection by a wide margin. Dusky pinkish-gold coloration decorates both sides of this near-Gem proof example. This sharply struck piece is housed in a green-label holder and shows considerable cameo contrast, although unrecognized at PCGS. Population: 16 in 64, 20 finer (3/09).
