1867 With Rays Shield Nickel, PR65
A Classic Proof Rarity

1867 5C Rays PR65 NGC. Dannreuther-3. The With Rays 1867 proof Shield nickel is the key to the series. The recorded mintage, those coins sold as part of silver proof sets, is only 25 pieces, although small numbers of additional coins were struck on later occasions. It is believed that approximately 50 to 60 examples are known today, which belies the inflated NGC and PCGS certified populations which suggest a combined survival of 88 pieces in all grades. In the Guide Book of Shield and Liberty Head Nickels, Bowers writes: "The 1867 With Rays Proof is a classic rarity. Probably no more than several dozen or so are known today ..." This Gem example is boldly struck, with reflective fields that are slightly muted in their mirroring by dusky olive-gold toning that encompasses each side. No distracting marks are present and the overall appeal is pleasing. Census: 7 in 65, 0 finer (6/15).
