Fantastic Gem Proof 1867 Rays Nickel

1867 5C Rays PR65 PCGS. CAC. The 1867 With Rays five cent nickel specimens are among the most enigmatic regular-issue proofs of their era. Q. David Bowers, in his Guide Book of Shield and Liberty Head Nickels, calls the issue a "classic rarity" and further writes: "Probably no more than several dozen or so are known ... The mintage is unknown. Students of the series have given many opinions, including the statement that no Proofs at all were struck until several years later."
Bowers also cites the work of John Dannreuther, who has posited that an "original" mintage of 15 proofs came out in 1867 and that more restrikes were made later, in several batches. The traditional mintage figure of 25 pieces is almost certainly incorrect, judging from the sizable number of submissions in the combined certified population, though a single example might account for several of those grading events. While this issue's original mintage remains in dispute and the number of survivors is hard to pin down, what is not up for debate is that the 1867 With Rays proof nickel is the rarest and most costly issue of its series, and demand greatly exceeds supply.
The present Gem representative is boldly detailed with strong mirrors that shine through a thin veil of gray-gold patina. Rose accents visit the centers. The surfaces are pleasingly preserved with no overt flaws and excellent overall eye appeal. The series enthusiast should give this remarkable specimen serious consideration. PCGS has graded a mere three finer examples (9/08).(Registry values: N10218)
