1867 Rays Shield Nickel, PR65
Classic Five Cent Rarity

1867 5C Rays PR65 PCGS. CAC. Ranked in the 100 Greatest U.S. Coins (third edition). Research by John Dannreuther indicates both original proofs and restrike proofs exist for this classic five cent rarity. While exact mintages are uncertain, perhaps 15 original proofs were made in early 1867, with the restrikes occurring at different times in small quantities. It is believed the latest restrikes were made approximately 1873 to 1879 at the direction of Mint Director Dr. Henry Linderman. Perhaps as many as 60 to 70 With Rays proofs were produced in all (originals plus restrikes), although perhaps not all survived.

Numerous restrikes of different coins are known from Dr. Linderman's time at the Mint. Most appeared during his second tenure in the 1870s, although some date from his earlier directorship from 1867 through 1869. The With Rays proofs were likely struck during both periods.

This example is the Dannreuther-3 variety with Obverse 3, State a and Reverse A, State d. The variety is identified by a diagnostic lump on the Shield Ball above the date, with the reverse die state showing a weak center ray below the second T of STATES. The die pair is thought to have been used on some of the later restrikes.

All 1867 With Rays proofs are extremely rare and important. Gem coins are especially valued for advanced collections. This example shows attractive, light champagne-gold toning over mirrored surfaces. A thin coat of mint frost covers the sharply struck devices. No carbon spots or other detractions exist other than a small mark after the D in UNITED and a bit of cloudiness at the center reverse. Housed in a green label holder, this appealing example is CAC approved for quality.
