Description
1868 Shield Nickel--Reverse Spot Removed--NGC. Proof. Breen (1989) mentions two varieties for the 1868 proof nickels. This variety shows the base of 1 in the date recut, a circle (lower loop of an extra 8) overlaps middle of last 8, and scattered die lines slanting down to the right in the stripes. Sharply struck and exhibiting splashes of light gold color. A small area within the loop of the 5 has been lightly tooled apparently to remove a spot.
