Description

1870 5C PR66 Cameo NGC. With an estimated mintage of 1,000 pieces, the proof 1870 Shield nickel is surprisingly hard to locate in high grade, and examples with cameo contrast are even more elusive. Almost all proof 1870 Shield nickels exhibit planchet problems, with this piece displaying slight granularity. Areas of die polish lines appear on the obverse. As is often the case for this issue, excessive die polishing led to areas of incomplete detail in some letters in the reverse legend. Census: 13 in 66 Cameo, 2 finer (10/13).(Registry values: N1793)
