Description

Challenging 1870 Shield Nickel, PR66

1870 5C PR66 NGC. The 1870 Shield nickel proof mintage is given as 1,000-plus in the 2009 Guide Book, while David Bowers reports an estimate of 850 to 1,000. In any event, the 1870 is challenging in the lofty grade of PR66, where fewer than 20 pieces have been graded by NGC and PCGS and none finer. A solid strike imparts virtually complete detail to the devices, including the star centers, elements that are sometimes ill-defined. Soft beige-gold patina occupies both sides, each of which is devoid of mentionable marks. Census: 15 in 66, 0 finer (4/09).(Registry values: N1793)
