1871 Shield Nickel, PR66
One Finer at PCGS
1871 5C PR66 PCGS. The largely brilliant obverse shows
glints of orange peripheral tones, while the reverse exhibits
violet and cobalt-blue hues. The design definition is predictably
razor-sharp for a proof, and marks are limited to a few microscopic
flecks over each side. There is a prominent lint mark in the form
of a 2 just left of the value on the reverse.Population Data (8/15): PCGS lists 32 in PR66 (one PR66+) with a single example finer. There are 37 in PR66 at NGC (including some with Plus and/or Star designations) and four finer.
Heritage Commentary: The dearth of comparably graded Mint State circulation strikes puts pressure on top-notch proofs such as this. For example, PCGS has seen only 10 MS66 coins compared to the 32 PR66 submissions noted above, making this a fantastic option for the budget-conscious collector.
