Description

1874 Shield Nickel, PR67 Cameo
Tied for Finest at PCGS

1874 5C PR67 Cameo PCGS. The 2015 Guide Book lists the mintage of 1874 proof Shield nickels as 700+ pieces and this spectacular Superb Gem is one of the finest survivors. The design elements are sharply detailed in most areas, but one star and the letters in the legend at 4 o'clock are a little soft. This localized softness is seen on many examples of this issue and was caused by grease, or some other foreign matter, partially filling the recesses in the die. Both letters and stars show signs of recutting. The frosty devices contrast boldly with the reflective fields and the surfaces are impeccably preserved. Population: 3 in 67 Cameo, 0 finer (1/15).(Registry values: N2998)
