Description

1876 Shield Nickel, PR67+
Atop the Condition Census

1876 5C PR67+ NGC. Proof mintages increased across the board in 1876, probably with the expectation that Centennial celebrations would heighten demand for souvenir coinage. At least 1,150 proof Shield nickels were struck, and it is possible the production was even higher. Whatever the actual mintage, this PR67+ example stands proudly atop the Condition Census for non-Cameo proofs. Each side offers mixed lavender, powder-blue, and peach-orange toning over reflective, nearly flawlessly preserved surfaces. Census: 6 in 67 (1 in 67+, 1 in 67 ★ ), 0 finer (1/16).(Registry values: N2998)
