Proof-Only Key Date
1877 5C JD-1, R.2, PR63 PCGS. There are three proof-only
dates in the Shield nickel series, but 1877 is significantly
scarcer than the 1878 and 1886. PCGS Coin Facts reports a mintage
of just 510 pieces, while the Guide Book states 900 pieces.
The former figure is the sale of 1877 proof sets, while the larger
figure takes into account the purchases of individual proof coins.
This Select specimen shows tan-gray toning and a slightly cloudy
