1877 Shield Nickel, PR64
JD-1, Proof-Only Key Date
1877 5C JD-1, R.2, PR64 NGC. An abundance of existing
nickels and a slowing economy convinced the Mint to forego any
Shield nickel commercial strikes in 1877. Only 900 proofs were
minted for collectors and the proof-only 1877 Shield nickel was an
instant key date in the series. This Choice proof displays
moderately reflective fields and satiny luster on well-struck
devices. Light-gray surfaces are blanketed in a faint layer of
champagne and splashes of gold on the reverse. Only a few small
flecks are noted but they are not bothersome in any way.Coin Index Numbers: (Variety PCGS# 102786, Base PCGS# 3831)
