Description

1877 Shield Nickel, PR65 Cameo
Low-Mintage, Proof-Only Issue

1877 5C JD-1, R.2, PR65 Cameo PCGS. The 1877 Shield nickel is a proof-only issue of uncertain mintage. The 2026 Guide Book suggests a 900-piece proof mintage, while the John Dannreuther proof nickel reference indicates 1,100 proofs were struck, from which 900+ pieces survive. The most-recent Bowers reference, A Guide Book of Shield and Liberty Head Nickels (2025) estimates 1,200 to 1,500 proofs were made using two obverse dies. This crisply struck JD-1 Cameo example exhibits an unusually high degree of field-to-device contrast for the type, with mildly frosted devices and considerable reflectivity in the fields. Attractive lilac and pale-gold toning offers plentiful eye appeal.
