Description

1877 Shield Nickel, PR65
Proof-Only Key Issue

1877 5C JD-1, R.2, PR65 PCGS. The Mint did not produce circulation nickels in 1877 or 1878 at the behest of the Treasury in late 1876. With the sub-treasuries approaching capacity for the denomination, additional pieces were not needed. The numismatic community would draw from the 900 proofs in order to complete date sets. Generally brilliant, this example features transparent champagne and lilac on well-struck devices and highly reflective fields. Rich, frosty luster provides impressive contrast. Blemishes are few and insignificant, and PCGS shows only 53 numerically finer examples in non-Cameo (7/25). Housed in a PCGS green label Generation 3.1 holder.
