Description

1877 Shield Nickel, PR65
Proof-Only Issue

1877 5C JD-2, High R.3, PR65 PCGS. In the late 1860s, the public could tender coins to the Mint as part of an exchange program that took in substantially more nickels than the Mint paid out. After stockpiles were uncovered in 1876, the 1877 became a proof-only date. This Gem is one of the 900 proofs from 1877, and is sharply struck on reflective fields toned in delicate iridescent hues. A loupe shows typical tiny nickel flecks, but no other significant marks are visible. Housed in a PCGS generation 3.1 green label holder.
