1877 Shield Nickel, PR63
Popular Proof-Only Issue
1877 5C PR63 PCGS. A Select example of this popular
proof-only issue from an estimated mintage of 1,250 to 1,500 pieces
(David Bowers, 2006). The design elements are sharply struck,
including the horizontal shield lines, an area that often exhibits
softness. Splashes of soft lilac color visit both sides. A light
fleck is noted between the F in OF and the adjacent star.Ex: Franklinton Collection, Part 2 (Stack's, 1/2008), lot 191; New York Signature (Heritage, 12/2011), lot 3237.
