1877 Shield Nickel, PR65
Necessary for a Complete Date Set
1877 5C PR65 PCGS. CAC. An important issue in the series,
the 1877 Shield nickels were not struck at all for circulation,
leaving collectors to vie for 900 proofs that were struck to
represent the date in their sets. Today, it is the key to the date
series and a conditionally challenged issue as well. This is a
scarce Gem representative, housed in an old green label holder with
CAC endorsement. Pale-gold and attractive lilac toning combine on
both sides for strong eye appeal. The strike is sharp on the frosty
motifs, with the obverse more reflective in the fields than the
reverse. PCGS has seen just 40 numerically finer proofs
