Key Proof-Only Issue, CAC
1877 5C PR65+ PCGS. CAC. One of two proof-only issues in the
Shield nickel series, the 1877 is measurably scarcer than the 1878,
with a Guide Book mintage of 900 pieces vs. 2,350 pieces
respectively. This is a high-end Gem 1877 proof, which offers both
the PCGS Plus designation and CAC endorsement. The surfaces are
essentially untoned, with mirrorlike fields and lightly frosted
devices plus a few faint hints of almond-gold. The strike is first
rate. Population: 3 in 65+, 48 finer. CAC: 21 in 65, 15 finer
