Description
1877 Shield Nickel, PR66 Cameo
Key, Proof-Only Date
1877 5C PR66 Cameo NGC. There is no certain number of proofs
known for 1877. At least 900 pieces were produced for proof sets or
sold singly, but as many as 1,250 may have been struck -- the rest
struck "off the books." This is one of the finest 1877 nickels we
can remember. The surfaces are untoned and each side displays
strong contrast between the deeply mirrored proof fields and the
heavily frosted devices. Exceptional quality and unquestioned
rarity. Census: 64 in 66 Cameo (3 in 66 ★ ), 4 finer
(9/16).(Registry values: N2998)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 276U, PCGS# 83831, GSID# 2926)
