Description

1877 Shield Nickel, PR66 Cameo
Remarkable Contrast on This Proof-Only Date

1877 5C PR66 Cameo PCGS. The focus on the 1877 nickel is almost always on proof-only and only 900 pieces struck. Rarely is the focus on the quality of the proof finish. The reason for that is not only do the other considerations overshadow the finish, but the quality of the proof fields is often shallow, or at least not noteworthy. This is definitely an exception to that rule. The fields are unfathomably deep and the devices are noticeably frosted, creating a sharp contrast on each side. The mirrored fields are so strong they tend to overpower the pale toning present on each side. Population: 46 in 66 (5 in 66+) Cameo, 9 finer (11/17).(Registry values: N2998)
