Description

1877 Shield Nickel, PR66
Outstanding Aesthetic and Technical Appeal

1877 5C PR66 PCGS. CAC. The published mintage figure for this proof issue of 900 pieces is really just an estimate, as the number of examples sold as part of minor proof sets was not fully recorded. Gem-quality survivors are not prohibitively elusive, but the certified population declines somewhat at the Premium Gem level, and finer pieces are rare. This coin is boldly struck on the stars and wreath leaves, with near-cameo contrast between the mirrored fields and softly frosted relief elements. Traces of ice-blue and pale gold toning grace both sides, complementing the overall appearance. Housed in an old green label holder. Population: 34 in 66, 0 finer (10/14).(Registry values: N2998)
