Description
PCGS 1877 PR 66. Key date in the Shield nickel series, the 1877 is a proof-only issue with a mintage of only 510 pieces. This is one of the most attractive examples we have seen recently of this important date. The surfaces are toned a light golden-brown over both sides. The obverse fields show a moderate depth of reflectivity, but the reverse is shallowly mirrored. There are no obvious post-striking impairments, but close examination with a magnifier reveals numerous lint marks in the fields. These were created at the time of striking by lint adhering to the die and its impression being transferred to the finished coin, a common occurrence on proofs from this era.
