Description

1878 5C PR65 Cameo PCGS. Well struck and lightly toned, with the cameo contrast especially strong on the obverse. The reverse has miniscule planchet flaws that are as struck. The 8 in the date is repunched within the lower loop. Breen believed this to be the remnant of a 7, hence an 1878/7. Subsequent research implies that the fragment is a repunched 8. Only one obverse die was used, with the extra metal faded with later strikes. A proof-only issue.
