1878 Nickel, Sharply Struck PR65
Proof-Only Issue Needed for a Date Set
1878 5C PR65 NGC. CAC. Soft greenish-gray and light tan
patination takes on slightly deeper hues on the reverse of this
proof-only Gem. The design elements are sharply struck throughout,
and the occasional trivial marks are within the parameters of the
grade designation. Indeed, this coin displays nice eye appeal and
is well-deserving of the CAC endorsement.Population Data (8/15): NGC and PCGS have certified about 1,500 submissions of the 1878 proof nickel, making it available through Premium Gem. Higher-grade pieces are rare.
Heritage Commentary: The 2,350-piece production of the 1878 was the highest for the Shield nickel proofs up until that time and continued to increase through the end of the series. While not commanding the price of the proof-only 1877, the proof-only 1878 is still necessary to complete a date collection.
