1878 Nickel, High-End PR65
Proof-Only Issue
1878 5C PR65 PCGS. CAC. Subtle hints of rose and violet
provide the only suggestion of color throughout this otherwise
brilliant Gem proof. Semireflective fields contrast moderately
against devices that display a full proof strike. A high-end coin
for the grade, housed in an old green label holder with a CAC
approval sticker.Heritage Commentary: This is a widely sought-after proof-only issue with a mintage of just 2,350 coins. Although examples are more available than the 1877 proof-only representatives, this is still among the most challenging dates in the series. Walter Breen's Proof Encyclopedia (1989) notes that all of the 2,350 proofs struck in 1878 show the shaft of a 7 in the lower loop of the last 8 in the date.
