Description

Extraordinary 1878 Shield Nickel, PR66 Cameo

1878 5C PR66 Cameo NGC. Nearly every known 1878 Shield nickel, and all 2,350 coins were struck as proofs, has satiny, lustrous surfaces. Pieces such as the present Premium Gem Cameo proof with deeply mirrored fields are extremely rare, and much more highly desired. This early die state piece has remnants of repunching inside the lower loop of the second 8. The surfaces are entirely brilliant, untoned nickel-gray, with lighter gray devices. A remarkable example. Census: 10 in 66 Cameo, 4 finer (10/09).(Registry values: P2)
