Description

1878 Shield Nickel, PR67 Cameo
Problem-Free Example

1878 5C PR67 Cameo NGC. The 1878 Shield nickel often resembles a business strike more than a conventional proof, but the issue was nevertheless marketed by the Mint as proofs, and thus they are known as such. This reflective example does justice to both its proof format and its Superb Gem condition, with mirrored areas between the shield lines and around the central devices. The reverse dies were more incompletely polished, with satiny, semiprooflike luster. This is a fully struck example from an early state of the dies, as indicated by a lump or similar artifact in the lower loop of the second 8. Census: 5 in 67 Cameo, 0 finer (5/15).(Registry values: P2)
