Description
1878 5C PR67 NGC. Though the previous year's proof-only issue amounted to a little over 510 specimens, the Mint produced 2,350 pieces for 1878, starting a trend of four-figure mintages that would continue for decades. A hint of autumn-gold appears at the upper obverse rim, but the shimmering surfaces of this Superb Gem are otherwise untoned. Boldly defined and exquisitely preserved. Census: 22 in 67, 0 finer (7/15).Ex: Central States Signature (Heritage, 5/2007), lot 1446; The Scott Rudolph Collection (Heritage, 1/2009), lot 660.
