Rare 1879 Doubled Date Proof Nickel
1879 5C PR66 Cameo PCGS. This is an intriguing coin for the variety collector. Walter Breen listed a doubled date variety, a tripled date variety, and an overdate. Today, we recognize the Proof overdates as the most common of all Proof 1879 Nickels. This particular example is not an overdate, but appears to qualify as the doubled date variety with repunching evident left of the final position. It also has machine doubling or shelf doubling to the right of the date, which leads us to believe this may be the example described by Breen as a tripled date. It is an attractive and fully brilliant example with light cameo contrast. The surfaces are pleasing with only the slightest imperfections.
