Description

1882 Shield Nickel, Softly Toned PR68
Great Technical Quality and Aesthetic Appeal

1882 5C PR68 NGC. With a production of 3,100 pieces, the 1882 proof nickel can be located in most grades as NGC and PCGS have graded several hundred specimens. Examples in the lofty grade of PR68 are another matter; the two services have seen only five pieces so graded. An impeccably preserved specimen with a thin veil of milky steel-violet patina has a soft, muting effect on the overall reflectivity, but in no way diminishes its technical merits and aesthetic apeal. This coin will be the hallmark of a Shield nickel collection. Census: 4 in 68, 0 finer (4/14).
