1883 Shield Nickel, PR67 Cameo
Sharp Final-Year Type Coin
1883 5C PR67 Cameo PCGS. The deeply mirrored fields and
frosty devices of this Superb Gem Cameo proof exhibit delicate
golden toning and pleasing field-motif contrast. Both sides are
boldly struck, and distracting contact marks and hairlines are
nonexistent.Population Data (3/15): PCGS shows 11 Cameos in PR67 (one PR67+) and none finer; NGC reports 14 in this grade and none finer.
Heritage Commentary: Although the final-year 1883 Shield nickel proof is not a rare date in an absolute sense, it has a low certified population as a Cameo. Its popularity is heightened by its status as the first of three proof nickel types struck in 1883, making it widely sought in high grade for type purposes.
