1865 Three Cent Nickel, PR65 Cameo
Well-Defined and Appealing

1865 3CN JD-1, Low R.3, PR65 Cameo PCGS. John Dannreuther notes the bill authorizing the three cent issue was passed by Congress on March 3, 1865. Proof sets for a privileged few including T.H. Garrett received proof sets early in the year but the three cent piece was not authorized for mintage until Congressional approval. The T.H. Garrett minor proof sets would have included patterns instead of regular-issue coins. This first-year proof displays the usual widely repunched date as part of a pinpoint-sharp strike. The nickel-gray surfaces show moderate contrast to earn the Cameo designation. PCGS Population: 42 in 65 (2 in 65+) Cameo, 36 finer (12/25).
