Description

1865 Three Cent Nickel, PR65
Lowest Proof Mintage

1865 3CN JD-1, Low R.3, PR65 PCGS. Issued to address silver hoarding during the Civil War, the Mint struck over 11 million 1865 three cent commercial-strikes in nickel. The 1865 nickel proof, however, saw just 500 pieces produced, and is challenging in all grades and conditionally scarce in Gem and finer. The proof dies are identified by a widely repunched date, mostly visible on the upper curve of the 6. This Gem has nickel-gold surfaces that flash lavender and sea-green iridescence, and only a few scattered carbon specks are noted.
