    1865 Three Cent Nickel
    Top-Flight PR67 Cameo

    None Graded Finer

1865 3CN PR67 Cameo NGC. Breen 2-B. The first year of the three cent nickel series and the last of the Civil War saw the issuance of these proof 1865s, struck to the extent of somewhere between 400 and 500 pieces according to Breen and the Guide Book, respectively. Three obverse die varieties appear in Breen's Proof Encyclopedia; this is the most common Breen-2B, showing obvious repunching on the 6 -- but high-grade proofs are rare regardless. This well-contrasted Superb Gem Cameo proof is one of four in this grade at NGC, one of which also boasts the Star designation (8/12). There are none numerically finer at NGC in any contrast level. The greenish-silver surfaces show a bold strike and no mentionable signs of contact.(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 275K, PCGS# 83761)

Another major house refused the work stating it was too unique for the artist. Heritage saw that as an advantage!
