Description

1877 Three Cent Nickel, PR65 Ultra Cameo
Rare This Strongly Contrasted

1877 3CN PR65 Ultra Cameo NGC. Despite published estimates of 900 coins, the actual mintage figure for this proof-only issue is unknown, as the Mint did not begin recording the sales of minor proof sets until the following year. High-grade survivors become available with some frequency, but pieces exhibiting Ultra Cameo contrast are exceedingly rare in any grade; this is one of just two Ultra Cameo representatives at NGC, with the other being a PR66+ (10/14). The contrast is strong and the devices are well-struck. A couple small grazes on the cheek preclude a finer numeric grade, though the eye appeal is not overly affected.(Registry values: P3)
