Description

Sharp Key Date 1877 Three Cent Nickel, PR66 Cameo

1877 3CN PR66 Cameo NGC. The proof-only 1877 is the key to the three cent nickel series. Sharply struck, frosty design elements stand out against the mirrored fields of this Premium Gem. Nicely preserved surfaces display hints of light gold color.
A small die crack or raised metal is noted on the left side of the base of the second 7. One might wonder if this is an example of what Walter Breen lists as an 1877/6 overdate in his 1988 Encyclopedia. In any event, Kevin Flynn and Edward Fletcher in their 1999 three cent nickel reference present evidence refuting such an overdate. In their 2009 updated reference, they refer to it as a Repunched Date 1877/18 showing the following die markers: small die scratch from the left side of the bottom of the 7, broken top of T of UNITED, and a disconnected leaf above the right ribbon. This example displays these markers.(Registry values: N2998)
