Description

Proof-Only 1877 Three Cent Nickel
PR66 Cameo

1877 3CN PR66 Cameo NGC. The 1877 is one of the keys to the proof series of three cent nickels, along with the 1865 and 1878. The reason this date is a key lies in its low mintage of approximately 510 pieces in addition to its proof-only status. This is an exceptionally beautiful example. The surfaces are brilliant throughout and the fields are deeply mirrored, which sets up noticeable cameo contrast against the frosted devices. A shallow contact mark in the lower left obverse field and a couple of light specks of carbon are all that keep this lovely coin from an even higher grade. Census: 47 in 66 Cameo, 15 finer (2/10).(Registry values: N2998)
