White-On-Black Beauty
1879 3CN PR68 Cameo NGC. JD-1, R.1. Although not a
proof-only date, the business mintage for the 1879 was only 38,000
pieces. Thus, many collectors select proofs to represent the issue.
Proofs are available, but most lack significant white-on-black
cameo contrast. The present Superb Gem provides an exception. The
legends and devices are icy, and the untoned fields are darkly
reflective. Census: 12 in 68 Cameo (1 in 68+), 0 finer
