Superlative 1880 Three Cent Nickel, PR68
1880 3CN PR68 NGC. Minor repunching is visible inside the loops of the second 8 in the date, with the lower loop of that digit unpolished, apparently diagnostic for the 1880 proofs. The reverse die was lapped or overpolished, with several fragmented leaves, and the ribbon ends almost entirely missing. This amazing Superb Gem proof has full contrast between the lustrous devices and mirrored fields, perhaps deserving to be called a Cameo proof.
