Description

Premium Gem Proof 1888 Three Cent Nickel

1888 3CN PR66 Deep Cameo PCGS. A complement to the 1889 also offered in the present auction, even if not quite so extraordinary well preserved. Many specimens of this issue, like the 1889, were melted after the three cent nickel series was abolished in 1890. The present example exhibits profoundly deep, brilliantly reflective mirrors. The devices drip with heavy frost against this pristine background. Completely untoned, this coin presents no spots, ticks, or other distractions to the naked eye. Even under magnification, only the most trivial minutiae are found, including a tiny luster break on the chin, a single dark fleck near the rim, and a couple of ticks on the eyebrow. On the reverse a tiny indentation near the leftmost I appears to be a planchet flaw. Despite these trivia, this coin is incredibly appealing and virtually unimprovable. Population: 2 in 66, 0 finer (11/05).
