Description

First-Year Type Two Three Cent Silver
1854, Toned, Distraction-Free PR63

1854 3CS PR63 PCGS. The 1854 three cent silver is actually a first-year subtype, the first of the Type Two design, with two extra outlines around the obverse star and bonus olive sprig and bundled arrows on the reverse. It is also the first to be struck in 90% or coin silver as opposed to the earlier subsidiary 75% silver content, which Breen calls "billon." As with virtually all pre-1858 proof coinage the number struck is guesswork, but PCGS estimates that 25 to 30 are known. This conservatively graded piece displays variegated original patina on each side, blue, gold, pink, and gray intermingled. A stray contact mark appears in the field on the upper-left side of the star, and a curving lintmark beneath TE provides a pedigree identifier, but this sharply struck, distraction-free coin boasts more eye appeal than the technical grade suggests. Population: 5 in 63, 9 finer (7/12).(Registry values: N4719)
