Description

Rare 1855 Proof Three Cent Silver

1855 3CS PR64 PCGS. This coin was struck from the same pair of dies that the Mint used to produce most of the 139,000 business strike 1855 Trimes. The date is double punched, bold evidence of which can be seen under a loupe. The surfaces do not reveal any distracting hairlines, but the depth of the toning and the corresponding subdued nature of the fields perhaps rules out a full Gem grade. From the standpoint of originality, however, the toning is impressive, being cobalt-blue in color over the reverse with dappled reddish-russet and cobalt-blue shades on the obverse. Produced before the Mint began widespread sales of proofs to collectors, the 1855 is a rare coin with no more than 30 pieces (Breen, 1977) believed extant.
