Description

Scarce 1855 Three Cent Silver, Proof Format

1855 3CS PR65 NGC. Despite the fact that this cataloger has seen a couple of proof 1855 Three Cent Silvers over the last year, this pre-1859 issue is anything but common in today's hobby. We do not know how many proofs of this date were actually struck, but Breen (1977) states that no more than 25-30 coins are extant. These survivors are further in demand due to the limited original mintage of the business strike 1855 Trime. Struck from the same dies that later delivered 99% of the business strikes, this coin displays bold repunching on the digits in the date. Delicate golden-gray iridescence overlays the well mirrored fields and sharply impressed devices. A few trivial planchet flaws (all as struck) are noted, but we can find no singularly mentionable hairlines or contact marks.
