Description

1855 Three Cent Silver, PR66 Cameo
Rare, Among the Finest Known

1855 3CS PR66 Cameo PCGS. The proof 1855 three cent silver is a distinct rarity in all grades. The mintage figure was unrecorded, as was the case with all proof issues prior to 1858, and the number of pieces believed known today is likely fewer than 50 coins. PCGS has seen only 16 submissions of this issue in all grades, with just three coins qualifying for a Cameo designation; these include a PR64 Cameo, the presently offered PR66 Cameo, and a PR66+ Cameo. NGC shows 24 grading events, with no Cameos; neither service has graded any examples numerically finer than the PR66 level (3/15).

This is a deeply toned example with soft rainbow hues in the peripheries blending to deeper blue, violet, and gold in the central regions. The strike is bold and the frosty devices exhibit considerable contrast with the mirrored fields, despite the rich patina. A lovely example of this rare issue, among the finest known.(Registry values: P5)
