Description

Very Rare 1855 Proof Three-Cent Silver

1855 PR 66 NGC. This date has always been accorded more collector interest than others in the Type Two series because of the low business strike mintage of only 139,000 pieces. Proofs, of course, are of the highest order of rarity. No more than 30 examples are believed extant today, and for decades the 1855 proof has been highly prized. A coin in a Kabealo auction in 1958 realized an astounding $1,050, a price that stood as a record until 1966.
This piece is nothing less than amazing. It is far and away the finest of this date that we have seen in the past five years. The fields are deeply reflective with shimmering, glass-like mirrors. This depth of reflectivity adds an element of brightness that might otherwise be lost on a non-proof coin as both sides are rather deeply toned. The obverse has rose tinted coloration while the reverse has a touch of light blue in the center with rose toning at that margin. Struck from the Breen-2920 dies that show pronounced repunching on the 855 in the date.
