Description

1856 Three Cent Silver, PR64
Elusive in Proof Format

1856 3CS PR64 PCGS. CAC. Deep russet and golden-orange toning adorns this near-Gem Type Two proof. The reverse displays modest field-motif contrast, and the design features are sharply struck throughout, including the date digits, which are often weak on this issue. Both sides have been nicely cared for.

Population Data (8/15): Walter Breen in 1989 speculated that 30 to 40 examples survive. PCGS estimates that 60 pieces are known and has certified only 30 in all grades, including 12 PR64 (one PR64+), two PR64 Cameo, six PR65, one PR65 Cameo, two PR66, and one PR66 Cameo. NGC reports 17 in PR64 and 11 finer.

Heritage Commentary: While the number of 1856 proof three cent silver pieces went unrecorded, it was undoubtedly small. As the population reports indicate, it is a highly elusive issue.
