Description

1857 Three Cent Silver, PR64
Struck From an Unknown but Low Mintage

1857 3CS PR64 PCGS. The 1857 was the final proof issue before the Mint dramatically stepped up production in 1858. It is estimated that somewhere around 75 pieces were originally struck, but Breen's estimate (from 1977) suggests that perhaps only 18-20 pieces are now extant. This near-Gem is deeply toned, with blue-green and tan-gray patina over each side. Close examination with a magnifier shows only one mark that could be used for pedigree purposes, a fishhook-shaped strike-through (probably from a piece of wire) above and angling down through the 185 in the date. Wispy die striations appear in the fields on the lower half of the obverse. Bright and highly reflective on each side. Population: 22 in 64, 9 finer (1/11).(Registry values: N2998)
