Description

1857 Three Cent Silver, Brilliant PR65
Unrecorded but Small Number of Proofs Struck

1857 3CS PR65 NGC. This year is significant as one of the few of the Type Two design as a proof, and also the final year before proofs were made on a large scale by the U.S. Mint. Estimates vary of the number struck and the number extant, but what is significant to collectors today is how many are actually available. NGC has only certified 15 Gem proofs with seven finer, while PCGS has graded nine in PR65 with only one finer (8/13). This Gem is all-brilliant on each side. Heavy die striations explain the exceptionally bright mirrors in the fields, and also explain thinning of the lower portion of the outline of the star on the obverse.(Registry values: N4719)
