Description

Toned Gem Proof 1857 Three Cent Silver

1857 3CS PR65 PCGS. The 1857 is the final proof issue before the Mint dramatically stepped up production in 1858. It is estimated that somewhere around 75 pieces were originally struck but Breen's estimate (from 1977) suggests that perhaps only 18-20 pieces are now extant. This Gem is deeply toned with sea-green and gray patina over each side. Close examination with a magnifier shows only one mark that could be used for pedigree purposes, that being in the field below the TA in STATES. Heavy die striations are located in the field on the lower half of the obverse. Bright and highly reflective on each side. Population: 7 in 65, 1 finer (7/02).
